Description
The Stanton St John War Memorial is a tall limestone structure located in the northern part of the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade I-listed building. It stands at a road junction surrounded by several other listed buildings. The memorial features a Latin cross adorned with decorative carvings, which rises from a tapering, octagonal shaft. The base of the cross shaft is broached and sits on an octagonal plinth, which is set on a two-stage, octagonal base.
An inscription around the lower stage of the base reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the upper stage. Additionally, one face of the upper stage of the base has an inscription reading "1939 – 1945," with the name of a serviceman who died in the Second World War recorded beneath it. All inscriptions are incised.
