Description
The Butter Cross is a Grade I listed structure located in the Market Place, dating back to 1689. It is octagonal in shape and features a lead-covered dome roof. Atop the cross is a wooden pedestal that supports a lead figure of Justice, which weighs 18 hundredweight and was added in 1754. The columns of the cross are currently supported on stone plinths; however, they were originally placed on wooden bases atop raised steps. In the center of the cross, there was a prisoner's cage used for the temporary detention of offenders, which was removed in 1836. The steps were eliminated in 1867 when an earlier dungeon was discovered beneath, believed to be the remains of an earlier cross that was destroyed in a fire in 1688. The Butter Cross is scheduled as an ancient monument. It is part of a group with Nos 1 to 11 (odd), Nos 11A, 13, and 17 to 21 (odd).
