Description
The tea house on the upper terrace, located approximately 7 yards southwest of Bawdsey Manor, is a garden building dating from around 1900. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a copper roof. The structure has a single-storey, octagonal plan.
The east front showcases round-headed arches in the three easternmost bays, supported by ashlar half-columns with moulded caps and bases at the corner piers. Above the columns is an ashlar string-course, followed by panelled entablature pieces. A dentilled cornice runs beneath the eaves, topped by a copper-sheathed ogee dome with ribs that rise to a moulded finial. The north and south walls are blank, while the three western faces have oval openings in the upper wall, each with moulded ashlar surrounds.
Inside, the tea house features oak panelling below the dado line. Above this, there are south Italian coloured tiles depicting purple bunches of grapes with green leaves, followed by blue and white tiles with wave patterns. The topmost level of tiles has yellow star patterns in the centers. The ceiling is finished with pine panelling, which may be of a later date.
