Description

BAWDSEY (Off) FERRY ROAD TM 33 NW (South end) 12/14 Tea-house on the upper terrace, c. 7 yards south west of Bawdsey Manor G.V. II Garden Building. c.1900. Brick with ashlar dressings and a copper roof. Single storey, octagonal plan. East front: Round-headed arches to the three easternmost bays with ashlar half-columns with moulded caps and bases to the corner piers. Ashlar string-course above the columns, above which are panelled entablature pieces. Dentilled cornice below the eaves. Copper-sheathed ogee dome above this with ribs rising to a moulded finial. Blank walls to north and south. The three western faces have oval openings to the upper wall with moulded ashlar surrounds.

Interior: oak panelling below the dado line. Above this are south Italian coloured tiles showing purple bunches of grapes with green leaves and above these blue and white tiles with wave patterns, the topmost level of tiles having yellow star patterns to their centres. Pine panelling to the ceiling, perhaps of later date.
