Description

Bawdsey Manor Pulhamite Cliff structures are artificial features built in the early 19th century using yellow stock brick, likely sourced from a demolished Martello tower, and rendered with Pulhamite, a cement mixture that includes shale, shingle, and shell fragments from the nearby beach.

The cliff stands approximately 45 meters high and stretches 121 meters along a naturally occurring red crag cliff. The Pulhamite structure extends westward from the cliff's top, forming the southern boundary of a round garden that occupies the site of Martello tower 'V'.

The exterior includes a path located midway between the top of the cliff and the beach, which can be accessed from the southern end. Most of the path is usable, although there has been some slippage at the northern end. The Pulhamite structure features crags and planting areas, with rock-like contours, seating, a waterfall crossed by a bridge, two small caves, and a grotto near the center. The grotto includes a belvedere with viewing holes and seating. It can be accessed from the round garden through an ornate timber door, and steps from the grotto lead down to a lower path near the beach.

At the top of the cliff, three tunnels provide access to the round garden through the Pulhamite rock bank. Another tunnel on the eastern side of the garden leads to the back of the grotto. To the west of the round garden, a Pulhamite tunnel connects back to the house, while another tunnel heads west towards the current car park.

Inside the grotto, the structure is supported by central pillars made from ceramic pipe with a concrete render, and there are Pulhamite seats available for use.
