Description

Receiver block, built in 1937 as part of Bawdsey Manor's radio direction finding (RDF, or radar) facilities. The building is constructed of brick with a flat, reinforced-concrete roof, which is enclosed by a wall covered in flint shingles designed to disperse blast. It has a rectangular plan, featuring wooden doors and windows, and is surrounded by earth-banked blast walls. A historical note explains that transmission and reception of radio waves were vital functions of RDF, and these operations were housed in buildings protected by blast walls for defense against air attack. The design at Bawdsey established the standard layout for all "Type A" Chain Home radar stations; see the Transmitter Block description for further information about Bawdsey's significance.
