Description
The Quilter Monument, located in the churchyard of St Mary in Bawdsey, is a chest tomb dating from around 1911. It is made of white ashlar and designed in the English Baroque style. The tomb is raised on an earth mound and can be accessed by two steps. It has a rectangular shape with diagonally set scroll buttresses at the corners, featuring acanthus decoration. Swags adorn all four sides, with winged cherubs' heads positioned at the upper center of each of the longer faces. The eastern, shorter face displays a coat of arms. The inscription on the west face commemorates William Cuthbert Quilter, the first baronet, who lived from 1814 to 1911, along with his wife, Mary Anne, who died in 1927, and their son, Roger Cuthbert Quilter, a composer who passed away in 1953. Additional inscriptions along the sides honor the second Baronet, who died in 1952, the third Baronet, who died in 1959, and other family members.
