Description

BAWDSEY (Off) FERRY ROAD TM 33 NW (South end) 12/15 Terrace walls and Steps below Bawdsey Manor G.V. II Three terrace retaining walls and flights of steps connecting the levels. c. 1900. Red brick with ashlar dressings. Lowest wall of c. 3 feet in height and two upper walls of c. 8 feet high, connected by Imperial staircase rising from two lower flights to a landing over a seating recess and then rising as a single flight. All the walls have ashlar coping and regularly placed pilaster buttresses with flat ashlar caps. the staircase has ashlar treads, square piers with flat ashlar caps and open ashlar panels of strapwork to the balustrade. It rises by two lower flights of 11 steps to quarter-landings then by a further two flights of 10 steps to meet at the landing above the loggia which has a 4-centred archway of moulded brick. Above this is a flight of 3 steps leading to the level of the lower terrace. Nine further steps lead up to the level of the upper terrace.
