Description

SOUTH ELMHAM ST. NICHOLAS TM 38 SW ALL SAINTS & ST. NICHOLAS

4/36 Eel's Foot -

  • II

Farmhouse. Mid C17. 2 storeys; small-scale 3-cell plan. Timber-framed and rendered, with weatherboarding to the apex of the gables. Thatched roof with decorated ridge. An internal chimney-stack with a plain square rebuilt red brick shaft. 2 2-light C20 standard windows to each storey. A C20 enclosed and gabled porch. The interior has plain timbering and widely-spaced studs. Main beams with chamfers, curved stops with groove. The roof is ceiled-off below collar level and the structure above cannot be deduced. A former stair trap in the service end of the house suggests that the room above was separately accessible and partitioned-off from the rest of the upper floor. A later single-storey lean-to along part of the rear wall.
