Description

Meen's Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the late 16th century and the 18th century. It has two storeys and attics. The right side of the building is timber-framed and rendered, while the left side is constructed of red brick with a pattern of blue headers. The roof is covered with clay pantiles and features two end chimney-stacks, with the one on the right set within a thick red brick gable. Both gables have high copings and corbels.

The house has two dormers with sloping, single-pitch roofs and 2-light casement windows. On the upper floor, there are five windows, which are 2-light casement replacements from the 20th century. The ground floor on the right has two similar but longer 2-light casements, while the left side features a replacement window with an arched head, set into an older opening with a segmental arched head made of gauged brickwork. There is a 20th-century door.

The structure is essentially an end-chimney house with four bays, which was extended by an additional bay and a second end stack in the 18th century. The brickwork on the left side overlaps the earlier timber frame. The timber framing on the right side is well-preserved, featuring close studding, arched braces at the corners, and cambered tie-beams supported by long arched braces. The ground floor room, which has two bays, includes a deeply-chamfered main beam with curved stops that have a double bar and shaped heads on the main posts.

Both parts of the roof are quite similar, with one row of clasped purlins and one row of stepped butt purlins. The collars on the right side are cambered, while those on the left are straight. A 1½-storey red brick wing was added at the rear in 1982 in a traditional style, but this addition is not included in the listing.
