Description

Church Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with later alterations. It is two storeys high with attics and is constructed of timber framing, plastered in panels, and covered with plain tiles. The building features an internal chimney stack with four attached sawtooth shafts and various casement windows, along with two plank doors.

Inside, the two bays to the north of the stack have a chamfered main beam and joists on the ground floor, and a cambered tie-beam with supporting arched braces to the open truss above. The upper surface of the tie-beam has housing for a crown-post, and there is a similar housing in another tie-beam against the stack. The stack includes two back-to-back hearths on the ground floor with plain timber lintels, and next to it is a fine newel stair. The doorway connecting the two ground floor rooms has a chamfered surround and plain arched spandrels.

On the upper floor, cranked reversed braces are present at the corners, and the main posts have long jowls. There are one three-light and one four-light original window with hollow-chamfer moulding to the mullions. The upper floor has two fireplaces: one with a timber lintel, brick-coloured and tuck-pointed, and the other with a hob grate inserted below the lintel. The upper ceilings are of a later date, featuring joists set on edge. The roof, spanning seven bays, has two rows of butt purlins, with the collars of the trusses set high and intermediate collars positioned lower between the trusses. This roof appears to be a replacement over the two northern bays.

The farmhouse is situated on a very large rectangular moated site and is said to replace a former manor house.
