Description
This is a barn located immediately to the west of Bleach Farmhouse, dated inside on a beam to 1772. It is timber-framed and sits on a high brick plinth, with some timbers exposed outside and 20th-century brick infilling, while other parts have old render. The north gable is covered with weatherboarding, and the roof is made of 20th-century corrugated aluminium.
The barn has a frame consisting of four bays, with the northernmost bay originally designed as a stable and hayloft. There is an entry in the second bay from the south. The structure features bisected studs, slightly curved primary braces, and lacks a middle rail. The trusses have straight tie-beams and long arched braces that are bolted together. The roof is divided into four bays, with a ridge-piece and principal rafters set on edge, supported by two rows of unstepped butt purlins, some of which are triangular in section.
Above the entry on the west side, the wallplate is painted with red ochre and inscribed in white lettering, stating 'Erected by Peter Spark and John Crow, Town Reeves, 1772'. This inscription refers to the Town Trust of Alburgh in Norfolk, to which Bleach Farm belonged at that time.
