Description

Glevering Hall is a mansion, now divided into two dwellings, built between 1786 and 1794 by John White the elder, likely for Andrew Arcedeckne. It was enlarged in 1834-1835 by Decimus Burton. The building features grey brick with stucco bands at the first floor level and a moulded stucco eaves cornice, topped by a slated roof. It stands three storeys tall with a main facade facing south that has seven bays arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern. The wide central bay is set forward and showcases rusticated stucco work on the ground floor, coupled giant Ionic pilasters above that support a pediment. The inset sash windows have glazing bars and flat brick arches, with louvred shutters on the first and second floor windows. The original ground floor windows reached ground level, but most have been altered. The central bay features tripartite windows, a segmental-headed window at the second floor, and a wrought iron balcony on the first floor.

The east and west facades each have five bays arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with inset sash windows and dummy windows in the two southern bays. The central bay is set forward and has tripartite sash windows similar to those on the south facade. The west facade includes a porch dated 'AH 1899' with paired five-panel doors, a semi-circular fanlight, paired stucco pilasters, an entablature, and a parapet topped with small stone urns. The east facade features a simpler porch with a stone balustrade above, likely from the same period. There are two-storey service wings to the north that match the main style of the building. Inside, there is a stone staircase with a fine wrought iron balustrade, and the ground floor rooms exhibit some good Adam style stucco decoration. One room also has painted wall panels and a panelled dado, along with good panelled mahogany doors featuring inlay.
