Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church that dates back to the medieval period and was significantly restored between 1860 and 1861 in the Perpendicular style. The church consists of a nave, chancel, west tower, north porch, and south vestry, constructed from random flint and stone rubble with stone dressings and a slated roof. The 15th-century tower features three-stage diagonal buttresses on the west face and a mid-19th-century crenellated parapet, both adorned with flushwork. It has a two-light west window and two-light openings in the bell chamber, along with a large clock face on the north side.

The nave has five bays with two-light windows, while the porch, a notable feature from the 15th century, has a knapped flint facade with three tiers of flushwork panels, a moulded arch, a hoodmould with carved spandrels and stops, and three empty canopied niches above. The chancel is two bays long and has a five-light east window. Both the nave and chancel have mid-19th-century scissor-braced rafter roofs with crenellated wallplates that are decorated with fleurons; the chancel wallplate is from the 15th century. Inside, there is a good 12th-century font that is square with convex sides and attached corner shafts. Beneath the organ gallery and on either side of the sanctuary, there is some 16th-century linenfold panelling that was taken from the nearby Swan public house. Other furnishings date from the mid-19th century. The church is listed as Grade II* for its well-preserved medieval features, particularly the porch.
