Description

No. 25 Market Place is a building that dates back to the early 17th century, while Nos. 1 and 3 East Street are from the mid 16th and early 17th centuries. These three houses or shops have been combined into one shop and have undergone alterations in the 20th century, including the addition of modern shop fronts. The structure is timber framed, plastered, and colourwashed, with a front roof covered in black glazed pantiles and a rear roof of pantiles. The roof of No. 25 Market Place is hipped at the front.

The exterior facing Market Place features two storeys and a dormer attic. It has an early 20th-century plate-glass shop front that extends along East Street, with a three-light window on the first floor and a flat-topped dormer containing a 20th-century window. The East Street return has a single 6/6 unhorned sash window on the first floor.

The East Street front has two storeys and a two-window range. It includes a mid 20th-century plate-glass shop front with glazing bars and an entrance doorway to the right. The first floor has a three-light casement window to the right and a 20th-century 4/4 unhorned sash window to the left, which replaced a mullioned 17th-century window. The roof features a late 20th-century roof-light to the right, and in the centre, the gable-head of the 16th-century range rises above the roof line. The rear of the building has a two-storey range with 20th-century modifications to the exterior.

Inside, the space has generally been opened up into a contiguous retail showroom in the 20th century. The Market Place range includes jowled principal studs in the timber frame and bridging beams with sunk-quadrant mouldings. The East Street range features a mid 16th-century wave and hollow moulded bridging beam on the ground floor, with heavy scantling jowled principal studs, chamfered bridging beams, and wall plates. The rear wing has bridging beams and joists with sunk-quadrant mouldings.
