Description
This is a two-storey town gaol, built in 1819 and later converted into a shop in 1835, with significant rebuilding in the late 19th century. A new shop front was added at this time. The building is constructed of gault brick with a black-glazed pantile roof which continues with the adjacent property, number 23. The roof is hipped at the right-hand end.
The front elevation has a single-storey, projecting shop front and a two-storey, single-window arrangement to the right. The shop front has a doorway with an overlight and two horned sash shop windows. A return section includes a wide display sash window with four panes over four, another horned sash window, and a blind box above a fascia. The first floor of the original gaol presents a central Venetian window composed of two panes over two sashes and a six panes over six sash, all horned, with a gauged brick arch above the central light. The building is finished with a dentilled eaves cornice.
The interior reveals holding cells that were converted and partitions removed to create a retail area.
