Description

The Town Pump in Southwold is a water pump built in 1873 by George Child for Major J.E. Grubbe, who was the mayor at the time. It is made of cast iron and has a triangular section. The plinth features an embossed crest on the west side with the inscription "Defend thy Rights," while the east side displays "Erected 1873 / J.E. Grubbe, Mayor," and the south side reads "Pro Bono / Publico / G.E. Child / Fecit." The spout is designed in the shape of a herring. The upper shaft tapers and includes a cast-iron handle. At the apex, three herrings support a wrought-iron bracket that holds a globe lantern.
