Description
Benacre Hall Stables, built in 1763-1764 by Matthew Brettingham, are stables and coach houses associated with Benacre Hall. The structure is made of red brick, with a slated roof on the main facade and black pantiles in the courtyard. It stands two stories high and is arranged to form three sides of a quadrangle, open to the east. The entrance front is symmetrical with seven bays, arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern, where the central bay is set forward and features a pediment with a semi-circular arched carriage entrance. The flanking bays have smaller blind arches on the ground floor, and there is a brick band at springing level across the entire facade. At the first floor level, there are small square sash windows with square-leaded panes, and a brick dentil eaves cornice.
On the roof above the entrance, there is a square clock tower and a bell turret supported by eight slender columns, topped with an ogee roof and a wind vane. Inside the courtyard, there are various six-panel doors, some featuring large three-centre arched fanlights with Y-tracery, along with some ground floor lunette windows. There are six three-centre arched carriage entrances with original doors, plus a seventh in a later extension. The first floor has leaded casement windows. The interior fittings are reported to be intact, making this a fine and remarkably unaltered example of 18th-century stabling.
