Description
43 and 44 High Street is a pair of shops with flats above, dating from the 16th century but rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of gault brick and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and is divided into two bays. The ground floor features two 20th-century shop fronts, while the first floor is lit by two late 20th-century windows set under rendered skewback arches. The second floor has two 3/3 sash windows. A painted sign indicates "Town Hall Storeys Est. 1837." The roof is gabled with a central ridge stack. The rear elevation is rendered and has 20th-century casement windows. There is also a rendered two-storey cross wing extending east, which ends with an external stack, all with 20th-century details.
Inside, the ground floor retains roll-moulded bridging beams. The first floor rooms feature cambered ceilings and include two mullioned windows. In the first-floor flat at the rear, there are early 17th-century religious text wall paintings, and roof trusses are reported to be surviving.
