Description

No. 48 High Street is an office and flat dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a slate roof. The building has a gabled range that is set back from but parallel to the street, with a one-bay, two-storey spur extending westward to form the facade. The facade has two storeys and one bay, with a 20th-century shop front to the ground floor, located to the right of an arched entrance that leads to a passageway at the rear. A 6/6 sash window, set under a gauged skewback arch, lights the first floor. The building is adorned with a triple modillion eaves cornice and has a hipped roof.

On the south side, there is a blocked arched door. The main block features one 10/10 sash window on each floor, positioned behind the front spur, both also topped with gauged skewback arches. The triple modillion eaves cornice continues along this section, and the gabled roof has a central ridge stack. The passageway to the rear contains occasional round brick arches. The rear of the building is rendered on the northern half, which includes a late 20th-century door and windows, while the southern part remains un-rendered and is illuminated by one 6/6 sash window on each floor, again with gauged skewback arches above. The triple modillion eaves cornice is repeated here. Inside, there is a stick baluster staircase that has been partly removed at the time of the survey.
