Description

41 and 42 High Street is a pair of houses and shops, now functioning as two shops and four flats. Originally built in the late 14th century, the buildings were rebuilt in the 17th century and again in the mid-19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is made of brick and features asbestos slate and natural slate roofs. It has a double-pile plan and stands three storeys tall, with four window bays. The ground floor has two late 20th-century shop fronts, while the upper two floors each have four top-hung late 20th-century casements, with those on No. 41 featuring rendered skewback arches. The roof is gabled with internal gable-end stacks, and the rear pile is similar in design. There are two 2-storey cross wings that recede to the east from the rear, which have 20th-century details.

Inside, the buildings primarily feature 20th-century details, except for the late 14th-century cellar beneath No. 41. The cellar has limewashed brick walls and is divided into two compartments by a wide double-chamfered 4-centred brick arch. The southern compartment contains a flight of brick steps leading to the street, which is now blocked. The east and west walls of this compartment are marked by 4-centred chamfered brick arches that lead to small recessed chambers with barrel vaults. Each recess arch has an engaged circular respond with polygonal capitals. The roof is supported by a forest of 20th-century brick piers, as the original vault has been removed. The northern compartment features a quadripartite brick vault with hollow-chamfered ribs on corbels, and there are no wall niches or responds. In the north-east corner, there is a brick winder staircase with moulded circular newel bricks, which is blocked at ceiling level.
