Description

This is a farm building, possibly originally a stable, that was later used as a barn. It dates from the mid-17th century and is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a roof covered in corrugated metal sheeting.

Inside, the building features a three-bay frame with heavy studding, a middle rail only in the gable ends, and reversed braces at the corners, which are halved against the inside faces of the studs. There is some later primary bracing and replacement studding. Evidence suggests there were diamond-mullioned windows at both ground and first floor levels in each bay on all sides, with four-light windows in the side walls and five-light windows in the gable ends. However, the north side of the east end bay has an original doorway and no windows at either level.

The arched braces of the two open trusses have been replaced with knee braces. The roof has five bays, featuring two rows of stepped butt purlins and long straight wind braces in the end bays, with some heavier rafters that have been reused. At some point, the building was adapted for use as a barn: the upper floor was removed, and the west bay was widened, with the studding taken out to create a cart entrance. This building is a rare example of a pre-1700 farm building that is not a barn, and it retains a comparatively intact frame and roof.
