Description
Grove Park is a mansion, originally dating to the late 16th century, but largely rebuilt in the 1770s for Eleazar Davy. It was likely designed by James Wyatt, with the roof structure dated 1777. The house is constructed of red brick, formerly colourwashed, with moulded stucco string courses at the first-floor and eaves levels, and has a flat parapet and slated roof. The main, north-facing front has seven bays arranged in a 2:3:2 composition, with the wings projecting one bay. It features sash windows with glazing bars in flush frames, flat brick arches, and dummy windows on the return walls of the wings and to the ground floor of the left-hand wing. A central doorway is accessed via a mid- to late-19th-century enclosed brick porch, featuring a six-panel door with raised and fielded panels and a portico supported by cast-iron columns, which were dismantled at the time of survey. A pediment sits above the centre recess, bearing a roundel within the tympanum. The south-facing garden front also has seven bays in a 2:3:2 arrangement, with the centre bays flanked by panelled stucco pilasters and a pediment with a roundel in the tympanum. This front also features inset sash windows with glazing bars, flat brick arches, and blind boxes to the ground floor. A central doorway has glazed double doors, pilasters, a hood on consoles, and a large rectangular fanlight, all dating to the late 19th century. A three-storey, three-bay service wing extends to the north. The interior contains a good late 18th-century staircase, Adam-style fireplaces, and moulded plaster friezes in the main rooms.
