Description
Marlesford Hall is a house built around 1790, possibly designed by Sir John Soane for William Shuldham. A library wing was added to the south-west in 1903, while an early 20th-century wing to the north-west was demolished in 1952. The building is constructed of white brick with a stone band cornice at the eaves and has a slated roof. It stands two storeys tall, with the main front facing south and featuring a seven-window range arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern. The central bays are slightly set forward and topped with a pediment. The sash windows have glazing bars in cased frames, flat brick arches, and paired louvred shutters.
The central doorway is inset and features paired glazed doors with small panes and a semi-circular fanlight with decorative glazing bars. A semi-circular wooden portico supported by two columns and two pilasters, along with a frieze and dentil cornice, adorns the entrance. The central first-floor window is set within a semi-circular headed recess with a shouldered architrave, and its sill is supported by two brackets. The central bays have a stone band at the first-floor level, a pediment with modillions, and stucco in the tympanum that displays the coat of arms of the Shuldham family.
To the left side, the library extension is set back from the main front and matches the original style, featuring a three-window range and a three-bay loggia. The east front includes an early 20th-century stone porch with glazed double doors. Inside, the drawing room is fully panelled and features a screen of two fluted columns and pilasters, with capitals decorated with an acanthus motif. The interior also boasts several impressive fireplaces with well-carved marble and wooden surrounds, and the library is decorated with wall paintings depicting sporting scenes.
