Description

Widows Cottage is a row of seven estate cottages located on The Street in Somerleyton, likely built around 1850, but no later than 1861. The cottages are constructed of yellow brick with white brick dressings and feature a roof made of mid-20th century concrete plain tiles. The design is symmetrical, with gabled end blocks that are set forward and a slightly projecting gable in the center. There are seven 2-light casement windows under segmental arches, along with four gabled half-dormers. The end blocks have ground floor 4-light canted bay windows. The windows retain their original lead lattice cames in the upper part of each light. There are seven doorways, five facing forward and two located in the end walls, each featuring a boarded door and a gabled porch supported by timber posts. The row has seven white brick chimney stacks. This building is noted as a largely unaltered example of local estate architecture, built for Sir Morton Peto to the designs of John Thomas.
