Description
The Old Court House, dated 1784, is a three-storey building constructed of red brick with a slate roof and a parapet. It features two stone bands and a plinth. The façade has three sash windows with flat arches, glazing bars, and stone cills, along with a dummy panel on the top floor. Originally, there were five windows with a central entrance, but this has been reduced, and the building now has an L-shaped plan. The entrance includes a six-panel door with fielded panels, panelled reveals, and an arched radial bar fanlight. Inside, there is one Adam type ceiling and mantel. At the rear, there is an 18th-century wing facing Chapel Lane, which is two storeys high, made of red brick with dark headers, and has pantiles. This wing features sashes in flush frames and a modern door within the original case, along with panelled reveals, consoles, and a pediment. The Old Court House is part of a group of listed buildings in Market Hill surrounding The Shire Hall.
