Description

Private house built between 1962 and 1964 for Imogen Holst, the composer, arranger and conductor. It was designed by H.T. Cadbury-Brown with draughtsmanship and detailing by his wife Elizabeth Cadbury-Brown. The house is one of two contemporary dwellings the Cadbury-Browns built on this site, which occupies a former 18th-century bowling green on level ground above the town. The other house, 3 Church Walk, is also listed Grade II.

The building is constructed of pink Marks Tey brick with a bituminous felt roof. The plan comprises a single storey arranged as a square range containing the entrance hall, living room, kitchen and bathroom, with a smaller rectangular range offset to the north housing a double bedroom and music room. A contemporary detached store stands immediately to the north of the house.

The main entrance is positioned at the north-east corner, formed in the re-entrant angle between the two offset ranges. It comprises a plain wooden door beneath a deep hood with a painted timber fascia. Windows throughout are a mix of fixed lights in square, horizontal or rectangular shapes of varied sizes, combined with side-hung or top-hung casements, some with transoms. Most have deep wooden fascias except for the horizontal rectangular windows. Fixed-glazed elements are timber-framed while opening lights are metal-framed. A metal-framed glass door opens from the living room on the west side. The north-facing windows to the music room and bedroom are positioned to frame views of the parish church so the weathervane could always be seen, a deliberate design feature also employed at 3 Church Walk.

Internally, all walls are plastered without cornices or skirting boards. Full-height doors to each room are veneered in iroko with minimal frames, a feature repeated at the Cadbury-Browns' other house. Floors are cork-tiled except for the living room, which has mosaic-laid parquet with a thin cork border. Window cills are of black quarry tiles. Windows in the living room, bedroom and music room, along with built-in wardrobes in the bedroom and shelving in the music room, are concealed behind floor-length curtains hung from tracks recessed into the ceiling.

The open-plan living room is partly lit by a tall skylight or 'light scoop'. An original fireplace on the east wall has a metal frame and black quarry tiles to its surround and hearth. The remainder of the wall features an original shelving system with metal uprights and brackets and wooden shelves. Back-to-back felt-lined doors give access to the music room in the north-west range, which is soundproofed with absorbent board. The music room has an identical original shelving system on its north, east and west walls. The double bedroom contains an original Anglepoise lamp mounted on the west wall and in-built wardrobes on the north side. The kitchen retains original cupboards, sink and a folding table positioned beneath a horizontal window overlooking the garden. The bathroom has been modernised.

The detached store stands immediately to the north of the house and incorporates a coal bin. It is constructed from brick with a fair-faced concrete floor and bituminous felt roof. Its walls are blank, with a plain wooden door on the south side.
