Description
Alde House is a house built in 1852, altered in 1904, and subsequently divided into three separate dwellings in the late 20th century. It was designed for Newson L Garrett. The exterior is of pebbledashed brick, with hipped pantile roofs and stacks on the rear slope. The north-facing entrance facade is arranged over two storeys and three bays, with the outer bays slightly recessed. A central double-leaf door is set within a canted porch with a segmentally-arched roof and moulded brick detailing in the door surround. The porch has a 13-vaned fanlight, and flanking circular windows. Ground-floor sash windows have 9/9 horn divisions, with a single-light casement between the sashes and the porch; the casement on the right is within a projecting addition. There’s a relocated window in this addition. Above the porch is a round-headed staircase window with 6/9 glazing bars. First-floor sashes have 6/6 glazing bars. Two-storey additions are located to the east, also under hipped roofs, and incorporate sash windows and doorways. The interior has not been inspected. Alde House is historically significant as the former residence of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917), the first woman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain, and the first woman mayor and magistrate in Britain. The 1904 additions were made for her and her husband, Skelton Anderson.
