Description

This is a late 18th century police station, now a house, located on the east side of High Street in Aldeburgh. It is situated alongside No. 21 Crabbe Street. The building is constructed of gault brick, with a hipped slate roof and decorative brick stacks on the end slopes.

The exterior features a two-story, three-bay front. Pilasters flank the corners, supporting a simple entablature topped with a moulded console cornice. The central entrance has a four-panelled door with a plain overlight, set within a recessed porch. The porch is distinguished by unfluted columns in antis, with a pronounced swelling (entasis) and a cornice hood supported by console brackets. All windows are 1/1 margin-glazed sashes set within raised rendered surrounds. A moulded platband runs along the first floor. A blank plaque is positioned above the entrance door. The rear elevation has a late 20th century pent roofed extension on the ground floor’s left side. The remaining rear windows are similar to the front windows, with gauged skewback arches above.

Inside, a stick-baluster staircase is present, although the newel posts have been replaced.
