Description
The Social Club, formerly known as The Three Tuns, is a 16th-century building located on the south side of Market Place. This two-storey structure features an attic and is distinguished by two original seven-light mullion transom casements with carved lintels. The building has a gabled roof with bargeboards and four-centred arches. The first floor is timber-framed and overhanging, although it is now plastered over. It has a brick plinth and is covered with plain tiles. There are six windows in total: five sash windows with glazing bars and flush frames, along with one mullion transom casement also featuring glazing bars. All the windows have Tudor-style drip moulds added in the mid-19th century. The entrance includes a five-panel door set within a modern reproduction Tudor porch. Inside, the building boasts several well-crafted moulded beamed and joisted ceilings, especially on the first floor. Historically, the inn served as a hub for the wool merchants of the area. The Social Club, along with Nos 1 to 10 (consecutive) and St Keyne, forms a cohesive group of buildings.
