Description
The Shorts is a house dating from the early 17th century. It features a long main range with a cross wing at the west end, which may have originally extended further north and could have been a separate detached dwelling. The main range has an original brick gable end, red brick casing, and re-used stone in one quoin and part of the plinth, as well as in at least part of the core of the building. The roof is pantiled, and the structure is two storeys with an attic. It has five window openings, mainly consisting of 19th-century casements with segmental arches, and an asymmetrical doorway with a four-panel door and a plaster cove cornice. There are three gabled dormers and an internal stack, while the gable end features corbelled eaves, tumbled brickwork, and a blocked attic window.
The cross wing is timber framed, partially plastered, and partially cased in brick, with a pantiled roof. It is a single storey with an attic and has an internal stack. The interior includes original newel staircases, some good original doors, and floorboarding. The cross wing has exposed timbering and a first-floor plastered brick fireplace with a depressed four-centre arch. The building is likely a former manor house, although there is no firm evidence to confirm this.
