Description

Argent Manor House is a house dating from the 15th to 16th century, with later alterations and additions. It features a timber frame and rough render, topped with a red plain tiled roof. The house has a central chimney stack with four attached octagonal shafts and consists of two storeys and attics. There is a single-storey extension on the right, built in red brick during the 19th or 20th century, which likely served as a former kitchen or bakehouse, complete with an end chimneystack.

The front of the house has a 2:2 window arrangement of 20th-century small paned casements, along with a 20th-century gabled porch and door. Inside, much of the timber frame is concealed, but there are heavy chamfered and boxed-in bridging joists supported by jowled storey posts on the ground floor. The chimneystack is blocked but coved outward to the ceiling joists on the ground floor. The first floor features jowled storey posts, and one arched brace remains attached to the tie-beam. The top plate has a halved and bridled scarf joint. The rear wing appears to be from the 19th or 20th century and uses reused timber. A cast iron fireplace with a moulded surround is present in one of the bedrooms. Historical records mention a Roger Argent in the Subsidy Rolls of 1295, and the current owner possesses an indenture related to the property dated in the 36th year of King Charles II.
