Description

Utopia is a cottage that dates from the 16th or 17th century, with a roof that was raised in the 17th century and a 19th-century extension bay and rear bakehouse to the right. The building is timber-framed and has a 19th-century red brick facade, topped with a red pantile roof. It features an off-centre red brick chimneystack towards the front of the ridge and another stack at the rear right. The cottage is one storey with attics, and has a catslide dormer on the left side. There are two small paned vertically sliding sash windows on the ground floor, along with vertically boarded doors on the right and left, each with simple surrounds.

Internally, much of the frame is covered, but the original structure, likely from the 16th or 17th century, shows that the roof was raised in the 17th century to create attic bedrooms. The chimney was inserted during this time, and the later bay and bakehouse were added to the right. The rear top plate and wall studs of the original construction are visible beneath the decorations. The raised roof is supported by a truss with an arch-braced tie-beam located to the left of the chimneystack, with the top plates for this frame visible in the front and rear walls. There is a staircase by the chimney and many original vertically boarded doors throughout the interior.
