Description

Baker's Almshouses are almshouses built around 1863 in memory of Reverend George Baker by his sisters. The building is constructed of red brick and features red plain tiled roofs. It has a half H-plan layout with a courtyard that faces the road, flanked by gabled wings on either side. Each range has two chimneystacks, each with two octagonal shafts, moulded bases, and capping. The structure is single storey with parapet verges at the gables.

The central range has five gables with bargeboards, with the center gable being larger and supported by arched brackets. The window arrangement consists of a 2:1:2 pattern of two-light small paned casements with square heads and labels. The central window is adjacent to a door on the left, both featuring pointed segmental heads, and the door is a vertically boarded type with ornate strap hinges. Below the window is a coat of arms, and there is a plaque above the door.

The right and left wing gable apices have slit lights, with two-light casements below, also featuring square heads and labels. The courtyard-facing sides of the wings each have an end gable on brackets, which are blank below, and three small paned casements. The outer faces of the wings have similar end gables, three gables with two-light casements, and hoods that match the central range, along with a larger gable that includes a door and window similar to those in the central range.
