Description

The Tattingstone Wonder is a folly church that conceals a dwelling, originally three cottages. It was converted into its current form around 1790 by Thomas White of Tattingstone Place, as indicated by his initials on a chimney brick. Originally timber framed, the north face, east gabled return, and west tower mimic the nave and tower of a church. These sections are faced with flint and feature gault brick rusticated quoins and dressings, topped with a red plain tiled roof that extends to the rear and south of the three-sided mock tower. A rear chimney stack is present, along with a dentilled eaves cornice and a plinth.

On the north face, there are two two-light windows with 2-centred heads, rusticated 2-centred arches, and keystones above. The east face features a similar three-light window with tracery above it and a circular, square-leaded window. The three sides of the mock tower are adorned with crow stepped crenellations and a gault band below. Stepped buttresses are positioned at the angles, and all faces have blocked 2-centre arched "Belfry" windows. The western face includes similar windows on the first and second stages, with the first stage featuring leaded lights. The ground floor window on the western side has three lights, similar to the eastern window.

The rear wall is constructed of brick, with gault dentilled eaves and quoins. It has three first-floor two-light leaded casements, three vertically boarded doors, and two ground floor windows. The north, or "Church" face, is visible from Tattingstone Place and is part of the landscaped park. There is a local tradition that Squire White remarked, "People often wondered at nothing, so he would give them something to wonder about."
