Description

This barn, located approximately 30 meters east of Brickhouse Farmhouse, is likely from the 16th century and incorporates elements from a 13th-century structure, with later additions from the 17th or 18th century. It features a timber frame that is weather boarded, with some original wattle and daub visible on the end walls. The roof is currently sheeted with asbestos, having previously been thatched, and is half hipped at both ends. The barn consists of three bays and two aisles, with a gabled porch from the 17th or 18th century positioned at the center bay on the north side.

The building is particularly notable for its significant reuse of components from a larger late 13th-century barn. This includes six arcade posts, arcade plates, sections of the eaves plate, one tie beam, and various braces and studs. The original barn also had aisles, featuring passing braces that rise from the external walls and pass through trenches in the aisle ties and arcade posts, secured at the tie beams with secret notched-lap joints. The arcade posts are unjowled, and the scarf joints are splayed and tabled with undersquinted butts and a key, of which one remains. The braces are straight and square in section. The 16th-century work includes a clasped-purlin roof and external walling with edge-halved and bridled scarfs.
