Description

This barn, located approximately 50 meters west-southwest of Church Farm Stable, dates from the late 13th or early 14th century but was rebuilt in the late 17th or early 18th century using much of its original material. It features a timber frame covered in weatherboarding and corrugated sheeting, with some sections of wattle and daub infill and a pantile roof. The structure has a brick plinth and consists of four bays. At the rear, there is a gabled midstrey in the third bay from the left and a small extension to its left. Originally, there was another entrance opposite, and there is a doorway at the left end as well as a possible pitching hole door high on the right end.

Inside, the barn has tall panel framing with a mid rail and jowled posts that support tie beams with curved braces. The roof is a clasped purlin type with additional intermittent collars, and the coupled rafters are reinforced with long diagonal windbraces nailed across their inner faces. Notably, there is a significant amount of late 13th or early 14th century re-used timber, some of which may still be in its original position. This includes one complete cross frame (arcade posts and tie beam), two arcade posts re-used as wall posts, two arcade posts re-used as lengths of mid-rail, one section of arcade plate re-used as the central wall post in the southwest gable, two sections of aisle wall plate re-used as mid-rails in the northeast gable, and various sections of the present wall plate that may also be re-used aisle wall plate.

This barn is historically significant as it is located near Church Farm Stable, a Grade I listed former hall house from the early 14th century. The original aisled form of the barn likely dates from the same period or just before and may have served as one of the ancillary buildings of the hall or its immediate predecessor.
