Description
The Fressingfield War Memorial Cross is located at the junction of Cratfield Road and Harleston Hill, near several other Grade II-listed buildings including Farriers, Knoll House, Richmond House, The Lodge, and Willow House.
This memorial features a tall wheel-head cross set on a tapering rough-hewn plinth. Surrounding the plinth are eight low granite posts that support chains, creating a square enclosure. Both the memorial and the plinth are made from pale grey granite, with the entire structure standing approximately 3.6 meters high.
The main dedicatory inscription, made of applied metal lettering, is located in a recess on the front face of the plinth. It reads: "ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF FRESSINGFIELD IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918" followed by 28 names. An additional inscription on the rear face of the plinth commemorates the years 1939 – 1945 and includes 5 names.
