Description

FRESSINGFIELD BACK ROAD TM 27 NE 10/14 Church Farmhouse - 29.7.55 GV II

Farmhouse. C16, in 2 phases, with C19 alterations. Timber framed and plastered with a hipped roof of concrete plaintiles. Remains of old panelled plasterwork at the rear. 2 storeys and attic. 5 windows, mainly large-paned sashes in flush frames; herringbone-slatted windows to right hand bay and one mid C20 casement window on the ground floor. 2 doorways, each with a 6-panel fielded door, reeded pilasters, frieze and cornice. 2 internal stacks. Victorianised interior with most of the timbers concealed. In the hall is the upper part of a boldly-carved early C17 overmantel, almost certainly brought from elsewhere: the elaborate design includes vine foliage, a central winged figure and a cornice supported by 4 crouching figures. The hall has a moulded cross-beamed ceiling; part of the original room has been lost through the insertion of the stack. The soffit of one of the cross beams has been cased with 3 sections of enriched Ionic pilasters of early C17 date. Some C17 panelled doors.
