Description
The tomb of Archbishop Sancroft, who lived from 1617 to 1693, is located at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, positioned at the angle of the porch and south aisle. It features a white marble tomb chest topped with a stone slab. The front of the tomb has an inscription in Latin, which was written by Sancroft himself, while one end displays another inscription in English. The slab is adorned with a carved shield of arms that combines the coat of arms of the see of Canterbury with that of the Sancroft family, topped with an archiepiscopal mitre. Archbishop Sancroft was born and died at Ufford Hall and served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1678 to 1690, during which he supported the rebuilding of St. Paul's Cathedral.
