Description
Pettwood, formerly known as The Old Rectory, is a house built in 1823 as a rectory for Reverend Holmes. It is constructed of gault brick and features a hipped low-pitched slate roof with various gault brick ridge stacks. The building is designed in a Late Classical style, characterized by wide eaves and two storeys.
The entrance front has a five-window arrangement on the first floor with 3/3 sash windows, while the ground floor features 6/6 sash windows and a central Doric porch that supports an entablature. The entrance includes double part-glazed doors. The garden front on the left side mirrors the window arrangement with 3/3 and 6/6 sashes and has a central two-storey canted bay. The rear garden front showcases two two-storey canted bays, the left one projecting further forward and possibly being slightly later in date. This side includes 3/3, 2/2, and 6/6 sashes, with French windows to the centre right and a part-glazed door with a fanlight to the centre left. On the right side, there is a small U-shaped court with various sashes, doors, and a large 20th-century window.
Inside, the entrance corridor leads to a part-glazed door that opens into the entrance hall, which features an open-well staircase with a curving ramped and wreathed mahogany rail and balustrade, adorned with elaborately turned balusters. The ground floor rooms mostly have 6-panel doors, window shutters, moulded cornices, and fireplaces that are either contemporary or from the mid-19th century. The bedrooms are similar in style but have 4-panel doors and lack window shutters.
Pettwood forms a group with the adjacent former Sunday school and is noted for being a fine quality, little altered house from its period.
