Description

Gandish House is a house with a probable 17th-century cross wing, and a former hall range rebuilt in the early 19th century. The cross wing is timber-framed, now rendered and painted, with a plain tile roof. A rebuilt red brick stack is present. The two-bay cross wing to the left has a projecting, square entrance porch with a panelled door. The 19th-century section has sash windows with arched lights to the front, and casements to the rear. A double-span roof extends to the right, with a ridge stack featuring four detached octagonal shafts. Inside, the timber-framed structure of the cross wing is concealed. There is a chamfered beam with bar stops, and a clasped purlin roof. Early 19th-century interior features include fireplaces and grates, a staircase with a ramped mahogany handrail, column newels, stick balusters, carved tread ends, and cornices. The house was the home of Anne Constable (sister of the artist John Constable) in the early 19th century, and she is said to have carried out alterations and extensions.
