Description
46 and 48 High Street is an important building that has undergone significant external alterations but retains some notable features. It is a two-storey structure with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with tiled and slated roofs. The building has two gabled wings at the north and south ends. The west front dates from the 17th century and showcases interesting pargetting on the upper storey, which includes designs of the Tudor rose, royal arms, and fleur-de-lys. There is a band of floral pargetting between the two storeys. The upper storey, which once projected at the front, has been underbuilt in painted brick. Centrally located on the upper storey is a clock face from around 1795, accompanied by a wooden eaves cornice. The building features a three-window range of 17th to 18th century leaded mullion transom casements. The south end has been altered to accommodate a shop front. Nos 40 to 58 (even) form a group with this building. The interior contains some medieval wall painting.
