Description
49 High Street is an interesting house and shop established in 1774, featuring many original elements from the 15th to the 18th century. The building is two storeys high, constructed with timber framing and plaster, and has tiled roofs. It includes two attic dormers on the front and a projecting upper storey. There are cellars beneath the structure.
On the ground floor, there is an original doorway at the north end with a four-centred head and carved spandrel, along with a fine oak door. Above this doorway, a bracket supports the projecting upper storey, which has remnants of a moulded capital and shaft. There are also traces of another doorway with carved spandrels above the current shop door. The shop itself features two bays supported by wooden brackets and small panes with original glazing bars.
This building is part of a group with Nos 45 to 55 (odd).
