Description
The Corn Exchange Public Library is an elaborate Victorian stone building located on Market Hill, constructed in 1841 by H. E. Kendall. The facade features four columns connected by a heavy entablature, with each column topped by a pinnacle shaped like a sheaf of corn. Balustrading is present between the two outer columns. A large central arched doorway is accompanied by a window with an intricate fanlight, and there are arched windows with detailed headwork on either side of the outer columns. The center front is raised above the level of the balustrading on each side and is adorned with a group of labourers, sickles, and sheaves. The interior is fitted out for library purposes. This building is part of a group of listed buildings on the south side of Market Hill.
