Description
Coldham's House is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in 1835. It features buff-coloured brick in Flemish bond and has a slate hipped roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets. The brick stacks have cornices and strings.
The house has an L-shaped double-depth plan, consisting of two front rooms on either side of an entrance hall that leads to a stair hall behind the left room. The right room and the one behind it face the garden, while the service wing is set back on the left side and is integrated into the overall design.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. It has original 16-pane sash windows set in openings with flat gauged brick arches. The central doorway is round-arched and features a semi-circular fanlight with radiating spider's-web glazing bars, a moulded panel doorcase, and an original six-panel door with flush and reeded bottom panels. The right elevation facing the garden has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows, all 16-pane sashes from the 19th century, except for the ground floor right window, which is a garden window. The rear elevation is also symmetrical with a 1-2-1 bay arrangement of 16-pane sashes, the ground floor windows being larger with low cills. The left elevation includes a round-headed stair window with an original sash that has radiating glazing bars at the top. The service wing to the left has smaller 12-pane sashes in openings with segmental arches. The exterior of the house remains largely unaltered, and most of the windows appear to be the original sashes.
The interior is reported to be unaltered as well. The hall features a round arch doorway with a fanlight and a staircase with stick balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail. The ceilings in the principal room, hall, and stairwell have moulded plaster cornices, with the stairwell featuring an acanthus leaf light rose. There may be additional original joinery details, including doors and chimneypieces.
