Description

Orchard Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features a rendered and colour-washed timber frame, topped with a thatched roof and brick ridge and external stacks. The house has a three-unit plan, with a winder stair located in the smaller central unit.

The exterior is single storey with an attic and has a gable facing the street. It includes 20th-century casement windows throughout. To the left of a large external projecting stack is a plank door, with two single-light windows above. The left side has two 2-light casements and a tiny central window, with another 2-light casement above. The right side, which faces the garden, has a porch with a door, a lean-to extension to the left, a 2-light casement at the far left, a 3-light casement to the right, and a 2-light gabled dormer above. The rear gable end has a 20th-century extension with a 2-light casement above.

Inside, there is a small amount of tall panel framing visible. The ground floor features bridging beams with run-out stops, two open fireplaces with bressumers, and a winder stair. While the roof is not visible from the inside, the ends of the rafters, purlins, and wall plates visible externally suggest that the roof is likely original. The history of the property is notable, with owners reporting deeds that date back to 1742.
