Description

Glaven Cottage is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later alterations. It has a timber frame, partially faced with early 20th-century brick and rendered and whitewashed sections. The building features a brick plinth and a pantile roof with a brick stack at the end. It has a single-unit plan and is a single storey with an attic, with the gable facing forward. The front has a single-window range consisting of a 4-light casement over a 3-light casement. To the right, there is a plank door, and a further door is located at the far right in the end of a full-length later outshut on the right side. The gable has shaped barge boards. The left side includes a plank door and a 3-light casement to the left. At the rear, there is a small single-light window in the gable and a door at the other end of the outshut.

Inside, tall panel framing is visible, primarily made of light scantling, although some areas feature heavier reused timbers. The interior contains thin bridging beams with run-out stops. The stack is likely original and includes an open fireplace with the remains of a bread oven to the right. The right end wall of the fireplace has been moved to narrow the fire opening. There is a simple winder stair to the left of the stack, and the original roof features long diagonal rafter braces. This house is a rare survival of a humble single-unit dwelling.
