Description
The Gibson and Scace family monument, dating from around 1800, is located immediately southwest of the south porch of the Church of All Saints in Laxfield. This monument features a raised plinth made of sandstone, measuring approximately 2.5 by 5 meters, which was formerly surrounded by railings. Atop the plinth is a chest tomb crafted from fine-grained limestone, adorned with shield-like panels on all sides, each topped with a decorative swag. The corners of the tomb have narrow panels in the Gothick style. It includes a moulded plinth and a projecting coping beneath an inscribed top slab. The shields bear inscriptions commemorating members of the Gibson and Scace families, including Barnabas Gibson, who died in 1792, his wife Martha, who died in 1803, Robert Scace, who died in 1841, his wife Charlotte, who died in 1840, and Gibson Harper Scace, who died in 1844. This intricately carved chest tomb is part of a larger family monument enclosure that is significant in relation to the Church of All Saints, forming an important group.
