Description
54 and 55 Gainsborough Street is a house built in 1692, originally the home of Edward Burkitt, whose initials can be seen in the fanlight above the door. The Burkitt family was prominent in Sudbury for 200 years. The building features an 18th-century red brick front and has two storeys, which were raised to three storeys in the 19th century, resulting in a loss of much of its original character. It has a slate roof and a wooden modillion cornice above the second storey, with a band between the first and ground floors. The house has five sash windows with glazing bars and a ground floor shop. The central entrance is accessed by steps and features a doorcase with an open pediment, quasi triglyphs, a fanlight, panelled reveals, and a six-panel door. The building is included for its group value with the adjacent property.
