Description

Two cottages, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, stand on Rectory Hill in East Bergholt. They are timber-framed and rendered, with a section built under with painted brick. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and a red brick stack is present. The cottages have two storeys and two first-floor windows. The original door was at the right end, but present entrances are now to the rear. The windows are 20th-century casements. A central ridge stack punctuates the steeply-pitched, swept roof. The interior of the cottage on the right largely conceals the timber framing, but retains one large chamfered beam, a moulded beam of 16th-century style, and some moulded joists; the rest of the interior was not inspected.
